Graduate surveyor Nicola Woodley, from Plymouth University, joined the team at USS back in June 2019. She showed such promise in her interview that we took her on part-time to enable her to complete her Master’s Degree in Hydrography.
Graduated with a Master’s in Hydrography
Nicola has gone from strength to strength during her time with us and graduated in December, where she was just 1% off getting a First! She was awarded ‘Best IMCA engineering competence award’.
Survey jobs all over the UK
Nicola has been our Hydrographic Surveyor on many jobs around the UK using our Inception MK1 and Inception MKII. Since coming on board, she has surveyed the Bristol Channel, looking into the difficulties associated with surveying urban environments – in particular positioning under long bridges like Temple Meads.
For Southampton ABP she used LIDAR and Multibeam to look at sediment quality of surrounding dry dock walls. For PLA she surveyed surrey bridges, Hampton court and Chertsey bridge looking at sediment accumulation around the bridges and riverbed. She has also been charting sediment ponds and looking at sediment accumulation in tanks.
She says: “It’s been a fantastic learning curve for me since joining the team, and I love my job. As well as the surveying I’ve written lots of manuals, and scientific reports. I’m looking forward to the next major job surveying the River Conwy in Wales, using USS’ latest vessel – The Accession.”
Nicola also just got engaged, so she is planning a wedding as well. It’s going to be a busy year for her, and we’re delighted to have such an ambitious and capable Surveyor on our team.
